Picked up my bags from the airport tonight, and stopped by LDB's place afterward. She's still cooing over her kitten -- something that gives me weird pains in my heart and makes me think of the cats I'll never see again.
We were joking around about the Cat-to-Human Translation device, a cartoon about a big box you strap on a cat so you can hear what they're thinking (which is usually "What the hell is this thing on my back?! Get it off! Get it off! Get it off me!!"), and I had another one of my pointless but interesting ideas.
In digital photography, photos have a histogram associated with them which indicates how many pixels are at each level of the dynamic range, typically thought of as ranging from 0-255 (at least, for 8-bit). Zero is absolute black, and 255 is white. It is the popular wisdom that images look best when they have a full dynamic range, meaning values which stretch from 0 all the way to 255. If an image does not have a full dynamic range, we usually stretch that range so that it is spread across the full range.
