There's this organization called the Center on Halsted, and last weekend Lacuna Diving Bunny and I went to their Non-Monogamy Workshop. I've wanted to go for a while, but a class conflicted with their schedule. Mostly, I wanted to go as another source of input on my relationship fears -- I've been trying hard lately to not describe all my relationship issues as "because of My Ex," but the truth is there underneath it all.

I dislike these sorts of events on principle because of the sort of people who tend to go to them. I was not surprised when I took an instant disliking to the man I call Sensitive Bisexual Guy, who frequently felt the need to interrupt people to ask for specification about the point they're about to make. Maybe if he'd let them finish their sentence, he wouldn't have needed to ask.

The group constantly tangented back to definitions and the dissection of meaning. I have little tolerance for that sort of thing. The whole point of living an alternative lifestyle to me is that I don't need to follow other people's definitions. Make your own rules, is what I say. Consent is the whole of the law.

......

Part of my problem is a growing cynicism for the sci-fi and fantasy genres. I'm really bored with all these novels displaying unambiguous moral choices.

......

My internet browsing of late has a running theme: the need to oppose. There are so many instances when sub-cultures develop as a rejection of mainstream practices, but then these groups focus on their rejection of the particular practice, and so spend much energy *opposing* that choice, rather than finding their own path. I'm reminded of a quote about how God loves a fervent atheist. Satanism is still a form of Christianity. I think the stuff about the Center on Halsted has something to do with this, too, just because it's become a perception filter for me: it colors everything I see.
