I saw her step into the space where we'd been, her eyes scanning the room for something she'd lost, something important to her.
I can still see the way her face lit up when she found me, still see the sight of her walking toward me.
Dear ASMP Members,
Things have been quiet on Orphan Works, at least partly because Congress has been on a holiday break.
To give you an update, we’re still working to keep all of the positive protections in the language of the House of Representative’s version. We are asking all ASMP members whose Representatives are on the House Judiciary Committee, listed below, to write to them to encourage them to keep the protections we’ve worked to secure. Faxes and e-mails are both fine; just use whichever method is easier for you. The bill is still in a position where it can be changed, so your messages to your Representatives will help encourage them to continue to protect us.
To be clear, we oppose the Senate’s version of the bill and are asking Senators to modify it, but we support the House of Representatives’ version as it stands as of today, Monday, June 2.
There are two courses of action we want you to take:
If you live in the House Judiciary Committee member’s districts, write to them with this letter

Everyone, please write your Senator to tell them to vote “no” unless and until it contains the same protections for us that the House bill has. A sample letter is listed here

As we’ve said many times, we’re not excited about either version of this legislation. We wish it didn’t exist, but we recognize that orphan works legislation is going to happen regardless of what we do. We’re trying to get the best bill we can in this situation by sending the right message to Congress that we need certain protections. The House bill is at a bare minimum of what we can accept. If it changes in any significant way, we will fight it as well, but for now, we want you to work to keep the protections it holds.
I understand how confusing this can be. Your trust and help are greatly appreciated.
Todd Joyce
