I've had this thought lingering in my head for a while:

A man with four plates will always have fewer dirty dishes than a man with twelve.

I have a closet stuffed with bed linens. My kitchen cupboards are overflowing with cups, plates and bowls, which I usually leave sit in the sink until I need more clean dishes.

I have enough seating in my living room for 6, but have not had more than two guests in my apartment for over a year.

When I moved out of Arrakis, I shared an apartment with [livejournal.com profile] deathofsadness which was perpetually empty, as near as I can remember. Except for the two parties I threw there (and the last one I threw when everything was in boxes, and the only furniture was a folding table with drinks on it), I cannot remember ever having more than two guests there.

I can count on one crippled hand the number of times I've had more than two guests in my current apartment, and can only recall one time I ever had more than three.

How many bed sets does a man really need? How many plates, when my dining room only has seating for two, anyway?

Maybe if I reduced the number of things in my apartment that can be dirty, then my home would feel cleaner.

Amul,
You can always donate things you don't need to charity.
But you can also straighten and clean.
Put some good tunes on I-Tunes, and get into the cleaning and straightening groove.
Pull everything out of whatever cabinet you are cleaning and decide if it has to go back, and if it is "clean"!

Once you start, it's like a mantra....and can help your mind be free to ponder other things, when your home space is clean and clear! -R

Even without comparing it to some of the more atrocious places I've lived, my apartment is pretty darn clean. It's just cluttered.

I sometimes joke that my kitchen sink is a good indicator of my mental state. If that's true, then my ipod is the gauge for my emotional state. If it's filled with music, then I've pretty happy. But if it's got more than one audiobook in it at any time, and I'm not on a long road trip, then that's a clear warning sign.

Either way, I listen to it while tidying up and scrubbing down. My biggest cleanliness issue is dusting, something I rarely do.

Thanks for the suggestions, though! The hard part right now is just figuring out what I can get rid of and what I should put in storage at my parent's place.

I just discovered that Half Priced Books have stores here in the Midwest. I love those guys because they'll take it all off your hands, even if they don't pay you very well for it. I need to take a crate or three of books from storage and find the nearest one.
