(f)AD pokes her head through my bedroom door a few days ago, and asks, "When you tell me that you haven't been able to read a book in years, what exactly do you mean?"

Well, I can still listen to audiobooks, but only when I'm driving, doing the dishes, or otherwise physically occupied. "I know, but what about actual reading. What do you mean, 'you can't read fiction?'" *sigh* I pick up a book and then I put it back down. I get maybe three pages into it and my mind wanders. Unless it's about photography, or a technical subject related to an art project, I just get distracted. Sometimes, I'll pick up a book and two hours later, I'll be sitting in front of Photoshop, with no idea when I put the book down, when I made the choice to edit a photo instead. Books....disappear from my hands, and I find I'm doing something else.

"That's weird."

I know.

Audiobooks work well for me for the cases I mentioned. All those tasks where I'm doing something, but can still pay attention - particularly good for long road trips, but also home chores like folding laundry, doing dishes, cleaning, etc.

No, the problem for me is that I'm no longer capable of sitting still and reading for enjoyment.
