(real fast)

Friday: Edited photos like mad. Dinner @ El Cid with a whole bunch of nifty folk, followed by Serenity. Serenity was awesome, although my eagerness to see it did not quite match my eagerness to see Mirrormask tonight.

Saturday: Spent the afternoon prepping for the exhibition and in the evening I went to Micah's scavenger hunt birthday party, followed by (of course) Neo. Only it was super cool because everybody from the hunt came, too, so there was a giant crowd of like 30 people that I'd just become friends with. There's a very fuzzy warm feeling that happens when you're at a club surrounded, I mean surrounded by friends. There were so many of us, we spilled out onto the dancefloor. I carpooled down there with Wicked Kitten and Pure Earth.

More thoughts about the particular joy that is carpooling later.

Sunday: Got up relatively early, did some online shopping for mattes and frames, then went to the Field Museum with [livejournal.com profile] psychomofo & [livejournal.com profile] pathogen. Egan introduced us to a friend of his who works there, this delicious young gothling that I must mercilously assault until she agrees to sit for my camera. Dear gods, her hair was GORGEOUS and she has the most lovely neck. Also, she's apparently dating a man named, get this, Toast.

Yes. These people must become my friends.

Tonight, we're all getting together for dinner @ Mitchell's followed by the

9:40 show of Mirrormask @ the Landmark Century Theater.

*ahem* Please join us if you can.

I'm taking a strange risk today, too. I invited some MySpacers to join us for the movie, a painter I've been making plans to meet later this week, and a Polish girl who recently moved here to follow her boyfriend and doesn't know anyone. I'm worried that it may turn out horribly. Hrm, well, I'll live and learn, I suppose.

It's been....oddly comforting to have all these plans this week, despite Comfortingly Bouncy being in Germany. I really have come to believe, months ago, that these people are MY friends, that they're not just tolerating my company because I'm riding her coat tails. But she's such a formative figure in our social group. There's one or two other central players who are also in Germany, and somehow we're all hanging out even without them here to lead us. I mean, I stopped questioning their acceptance of me somewhere around mid-summer, but nonetheless assumed that....I don't know how to phrase it.

I just assumed that none of them would think of me. That she's the only one whose ever said, "Hey, what about inviting Amul along, too?" Secretly I guess I think, even when she's not been involved in a planned outing, that she must have suggested I be invited. I even just had a discussion about this very topic with her, right before she left. She told me I was being silly, in that particularly Comforting, Bouncy manner of hers. That it's just scar tissue, leftover damage that makes me think that. I, in my ever-present cynicism, didn't believe her.

I forget when it was, exactly, but at some point in the last few weeks, Pure Earth brought up the fact that I'd actually met him before anyone else. Back at the Cruxshadows show last year, I met him and told him I was new in town. If you ever see me around, I told him, please say hello, because I don't know anybody.

"I'll do better than that," he said, and he gave me his card. I just found it again recently, actually. I never called him, of course, too busy working long hours and staying up late talking to AD. But it's true, he extended the hand of friendship and I never called him.

I think that's why I invited the MySpacers along tonight. Because I'm never half the man I want to be, and making friends is apparently just one more skill I need to work on.

Sorry I missed it - I didn't get your message until I got home from school tonight, and am clearly a bit behind on the livejournal. :)

Hope you had a blast!
