Excerpt from a conversation elsewhere:

For some reason, I'm reminded of Julie, the white girl in my high school who was dating an Indian guy who attended my dad's temple stuff. They broke up when he went off to college, and Julie ended up going to my college two years ahead of me. When I got there, she was in charge of the Indian Cultural club.

It was weird, looking back on it. In order for her to publicly date the guy I knew, she had to go all-in on learning Indian culture, including how to be pleasing to a mother. I think she started dating him when she was a freshman and he was a sophomore, so that was her formative dating experience.

> And also a little appropriate to then lead the Indian Cultural Club.

Well, like, it was a bit clingy, you know? And this was in the early 90s, when Indians weren't a large enough population here to really see these kinds of things done before. I know her interest in Indian culture was genuine, but also stemmed from a high school romance that ended several years earlier.

Was it still appropriation?
