A few weeks ago, I got a friend request from a woman who runs a Gil Elvgren-style pin up website. Her profile said she was in Chicago. Figuring we might be able to work together, I friended her and sent her an email, which she never responded to. This week, she posts a comment on my profile, thinly veiled as a thank-you but containing several links and banner ads.

I check her profile, and now it lists her as from Cleveland. Apparently, what she does is switch her myspace profile's location, and then submits friend requests to "locals."

This really frustrates me. I have been going through all that damn spam, on the off chance that one of them really is a model I might be able to work with. Especially since, if they're maintaining their own web page, there is a higher-than-average chance that they could actually pay me for the work. But in the last year, only one incoming request has been from a model who has actually written me back, and she lived on the far side of the country.

Myspace spam is particularly frustrating because, unlike every other form of junk mail, there's no way for me to sort through it without actually spending time looking at it. But I really am done with the idea of using it to network with models. That's been a dead end for as long as I've had the idea. The only time a photo shoot has ever been scheduled through it, the model arrived an hour late, refused to sign an industry-standard model release, and still wanted her prints.

Bah, I say. And Humbug, too.
