I was seven when my parents first took me to a library. My dad found me reading the encyclopedias, because I had read everything else in the house.
He took me to the basement, the children's books. In my head, it made a certain kind of sense. I had finished all the books in one place, and so he took me to another place where They kept more books. I was too young to really grasp who They might be. And upstairs, was more books.
I started working my way through them. I was diligent. I had heard the term "well-read" somewhere, and wanted it for myself. This was the same period in my life when, if asked for the time, I would say two fifty-two and fifteen seconds.....now. When I was nine or ten, a friend finally told me "Just tell me the closest five-minute mark." From then on, when asked for the time, people would have to wait up to four minutes before I answered them.
