Last night, while hanging out with Prefers Sacrifice, I found myself discussing something nice about Christine. I record it here, lest I forget.

When we were decorating Arrakis, Christine kept trying to encourage me to bring Hindu decor into the house. I avoided all such indications of my history, but she was vehement. She insisted that I ask my parents for something that would add a touch of my heritage to our home. "Even something as simple as a candy bowl," she told me. "But I'd love a painting, something you could look at and enjoy."

In the end, my parents gave me two hand-woven Indian silk rugs, a linen painting and a candy bowl. It was a nice gesture, and one that I never gave her credit for. My mom always used to complain that, by choosing to date an American, I was cutting myself off from my culture, and that she'd force any children we would have to choose between the two heritages. Christine was always above that.
