One of the perks of this job is that the bulk of it is just mindless enough that you can do it with background noise on. I've tried listening to music, but my tastes have gotten to the point where I'd have to bring my entire 100GB HD of mp3s in order to satisfy my hunger.
I consume music like I'm eating dim sum. A song here, an intro there. I'm trying to learn it all, trying to embrace it all. I even found this really nifty Salsa Blues band I need to share with people. I feel like I horde music, but I'm passing it out as fast as I can. There's so many people I stil haven't even exposed to Hayseed Dixie yet.
Is this a metaphor for my life? Or does it only seem so when it's four am?
Anyway, I can't listen to music. There's just too much to bring with me. So I play movies and TV series as background noise. I try to bring stuff I can ignore. Things I've watched before. But every once in a while I forget how beautiful something is. Like tonight, I'm watching American Beauty.
My favorite line in this flick is when Mena Suvari asks Kevin Spacey how is he, and he says, "God, it's been a long time since anybody asked me that..." Every time I hear that line, I promise myself that the next time I watch, I'll listen to hear if anyone ever asks him that before this line. I really hope they do. I hope they're constantly asking him, and he just isn't answering them.
It's the kind of detail you expect out of that movie.
Four in the morning has always been a bad time for me to do any kind of thinking.
