The bugger of it all is that when I finally got off my ass to do this stuff, I really enjoyed it. View Cameras and my preferences for night photography go together like engines go with cars. If I hadn't been so indecisive, if I had not procrastinated even after finally picking a final project, some two weeks after everyone else had, I could have been doing this all this time.
Instead, I started Thursday. Exact dates and times are muddled. I prefer night photography in the deep dead of night, when all the sounds of the city have died down to the quiet humming heartbeat, the under-noise which has always called to me. I know that I took (f)AD and Prefers Sacrifice to a movie, and then I took photos. I saw
papertygre while she was visiting, and then drove out to pick up Lacunae Diving Bunny, who knew of some very nice playgrounds out in the suburbs. I think that was Friday, but I also think that Friday was when I saw Performance of Sleep in One Long Act Without Intermission, which was completely awesome, and not in a Support My Friends kind of way, either.
Saturday, PS and I went out to scout some more playgrounds, only it started to rain. LDB and her St Louis Man drove into the city so that I could meet SLM, and invigorated by their company, I dragged them out to the same playground PS showed me earlier that day (the rain had stopped).
Sunday, I procrastinated a helluva lot more, worried now because the lab I'd picked only had weekday hours, so there was no way to tell if I'd shot well. I spent about eight hours talking myself into doing one hour's worth of work, namely pre-cutting mat boards.
Monday, I got the negs back from the lab, and managed to scan them all despite waking up late and being distracted by minor emergencies had by (f)AD and PS. I also saw Pirates 2 with the Pirate Crew.
(tangent: both Unpaintable Canvas and Prefers Sacrifice have been trying to talk me into finding time for a nude shoot with them all week. This is a particularly good bit of irony, especially if you remember the days when I used to complain that I couldn't manage to do the photography I wanted for all the eagerness my models showed for doing nude work. I can't see anything for all the clothes flying through the air! I used to joke. Now I find myself grumbling, Women are begging me to find time to let them undress for me and I'm just too busy, dammit!
This actually double-tangents me into another story. Thursday night, this group of college boys come into the park I'm shooting at in the middle of the night. They've got a bunch of high school girls with them, getting them drunk, and one guy comes over and tries to talk me into asking the girls to pose nude for me. "It'll get you laid, mang! All you gotta do is take their pictures, you know..." and proceeds to try to tell me how I might con these young children into undressing for my camera. I looked him straight in the eye and said, Dude. The whole reason I'm out here in the middle of the night photographing playgrounds is because I'm sick of women trying to sleep with me while I try to get some photography done. Now, if you don't mind...? Total lie, of course, I've never slept with a model unless we were already dating, but the look on his face was priceless.)
Anyway, I got home and edited a bunch of stuff. Today, I once again woke up later than I wanted, and still managed to get 11 out of 15 prints. I ended up using the Epson Luster instead of the Torchon, because I didn't have a high opinion of the work. But they came out really well! I even got done printing in time to make it to the Photo Critique Group and get some preliminary feedback on the pieces.
The reception the pieces got was more than just warm. I found that groove I haven't felt in forever, that giddy sense of The Miraculous Powers Of Art Creation which makes me bounce slightly when I talk, and occasionally shake my tiny fists in glee as I discuss phrases like "popcorn grain" and "reciprocity failure." I haven't really felt that since first showing Silent Dancer the results of our first shoot together, those early, pre-named Emphasis Mine pieces.
There'd been one print I was having trouble with, unable to pull all the detail out in the printer like it was on the screen. Cursed gamuts. So, at first, I only showed them the other ten pieces. Something in the conversation came up, though, which made it relevant, so I pulled it out dismissively and was quite stunned by the synchronized noises of appreciation. Peter Le Grand even called my printing technique "masterful." *does the happy dance* For a print I didn't even like!
I was worried that maybe the presentation had something to do with it, pulling it out at the last like that, so I showed the prints to (f)AD and THO. They picked that one and my personal favorite as their two favorites. So, I guess that's a kind of confirmation.
I finished editing the last four just a bit ago, and I need to print them tomorrow and then cut mat board. Fifteen exhibition-quality prints in one week. That's got to be a record for me.
PS - I recently discovered that I have 16 GIGS of photos of Prefers Sacrifice. Almost all of them edited, none of them printed. I need to rectify that.
PPS - I love, love, love my Intuos 3 graphics tablet! Now, if only I could figure out how to use the darn thing better.

Re: this is all very nice, but...
Date: 12 Jul 2006 21:10 (UTC)Geez, you'd think I'd get a little gratitude for taking you to Superman Returns 3D, considering how much I spent. Any other girl, and I would have expected her to put out a little for that much. *duck*
